Description
Battleship Potemkin (SovKino, R-1929). Very Fine on Paper. Russian Poster (37" X 27.75") Vladimir and Georgii Stenberg Artwork.Heritage has the greatest pleasure in presenting this Russian poster for Battleship Potemkin for the first time, of which only a very few copies are known to exist. The last time a copy of this poster sold in auction was seven years ago at another auction house and the poster sold for approximately $164,725. This remarkable piece features artwork by the Stenberg brothers, Vladimir and Georgii, known for their colorful geometric posters, and it is no surprise that they were chosen to create this dynamic piece for the 1929 reissue of what many consider to be the greatest propaganda film of all time. Most consider this poster to be the very best of the paper for this film, even over that created by Aleksander Rodchenko for the original release. Born to a Swede father and Latvian mother, Vladimir and Georgii grew up in Moscow, but did not become Russian citizens until 1933. The brothers' success can be linked to their masterful skills as graphic designers, their knowledge of both avant-garde theater and film theory, as well as their embracement of Constructivism. The Constructivist movement began in the late 1910s in Russia and quickly gained popularity. In rebellion against the autonomy of art, the movement endorsed the "construction" of art through paper and other media not created by the artists. As powerful today as the day it premiered, Battleship Potemkin retains its place as director Sergei Eisenstein's undisputed masterpiece. His constructionist montage sequence of the Odessa steps, though not part of the original script for the film, is still influential on cinema today. Film classes have used the famed sequence as an integral part of their curriculum for the last sixty years and no doubt will continue to be for many years to come. With a remarkably clean interior, this poster has required professional restoration to only a few small tears and a couple of minute chips at the edges with splices. These minimal flaws have been repaired with paper backing. In incredible condition for its age, this poster presents a wonderful opportunity to own a piece of such immense historical importance no collector will want to miss.
