Description
Battleship Potemkin (Goskino, 1926). Fine on Paper. Original Release Dutch Poster (25.5" X 42") Dolly Rudeman Artwork.Since its original release in 1925 (1926 in many parts of the world), Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin has been heralded as one of the greatest films ever made. Renowned for its innovative montage editing and powerful propaganda message, the film dramatizes the 1905 mutiny aboard the Russian battleship Potemkin, culminating in the iconic Odessa Steps sequence, which remains one of the most influential scenes in cinematic history. Offered here for the first time by Heritage Auctions is an original release Dutch poster with extraordinary artwork by Dolly Rudeman. This poster was was the first designed by Rudeman, who would go on to have a very successful career with the Netherlands Cinema Trust. An unprecedented 7,500 copies were printed for the film's promotion, a remarkable feat at a time when Dutch film promoters rarely commissioned unique posters for individual screenings, often opting instead to paint over the titles of imported designs. Although 7,500 may have been printed in 1926, it is evident that very few survived to the present day as we are unable to locate another that has been sold at auction in the last several decades. This poster has creases, tears, fold splitting and wear, and light touchup. An extraordinary original release poster from this groundbreaking film.
