Forbidden Planet: Robby the Robot by Robert Kinoshita (MGM, 1955). Signed Original Pencil Blueprint Drawing (75" X 41.5").
Original production designs are hard to come by for many movies, especially primary pencil drawings made before the blue line schematics, but sci-fi collectors should especially sit up and take notice of an offer as rare as this. Beloved by millions of theatergoers and science fiction fans across the decades, Robby the Robot stole the spotlight from the human actors in Forbidden Planet and went on to become a pop culture icon. Much of the credit for Robby's famous image goes to the talented Robert Kinoshita, the picture's head draftsman and designer of Robby's final form. However, Kinoshita didn't produce just one iconic automaton for the sci-fi genre, but three. Both Tobor from Tobor the Great and the B9 Environmental Control Robot from the Lost in Space series owe their look to Kinoshita, who redefined the robot image in media. Drawn and signed by Robert Kinoshita himself, this original production schematic shows slight fold wear, small tears and chips, and scattered foxing. The left side has a couple of tears, paper loss at the bottom, and some cellophane tape on the front. There are some vertical surface cuts in the interior, one of which has cellophane tape on the verso. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
