    Description

Foolish Wives (Universal, 1922). Fine on Linen. One Sheet (26.5" X 40").
Erich von Stroheim directs and stars in this wicked Universal melodrama, playing a fake count who seduces and blackmails silly, but rich, wives, in order to support his elaborate lifestyle. Von Stroheim's third directorial effort sealed his reputation both grandly with the magnificence and critical acclaim of the film and badly at the extravagance of the money spent and massive amount of footage shot. It was one of Universal's most successful films at the time of release, but at a staggering cost of over one million dollars in early 1920s money! The director would prove to be the greatest of spendthrifts with this effort which would later prove to be his undoing. The calculating Stroheim is featured prominently in bold stone litho on this excessively scarce piece of domestic paper, which Heritage is pleased to offer for the first time. The poster was sold previously in auction in 1995 and is the only known copy. A beautiful image with partial restoration, the poster has such indications of use as edge wear, tears into the interior, and pinholes. Other signs of wear include small chips and slight paper loss at the borders, some of which have splices. The bottom left corner has been reattached. Some of these issues are still apparent, as is faint staining. Though it might appear the poster is trimmed due to its slightly smaller size than the typical one sheet, we are not sure of that at all as the borders appear to be perfectly straight. Fine on Linen.
