Description

Flash Gordon (Universal, 1936). Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Chapter 5 -- "The Destroying Ray."
We don't often get to use the words "1936" and "Mint" in the same sentence, so we're excited to offer this lobby card for Chapter Five of Flash Gordon. This super clean card has four of the main characters from this episode; Buster Crabbe, Jean Rogers, Priscilla Lawson, and a most interesting character in film history, James Pierce, as "Prince Thun of the Lion Men." Pierce was a football star at Indiana University, and was handpicked by Edgar Rice Burroughs to star in the last silent Tarzan movie made in 1927, Tarzan and the Golden Lion (see lot # 83521). Pierce gave up a role in Wings to do the Tarzan movie, his role going to a youngster named Gary Cooper. Pierce also coached football at Glendale High..one of his best players?...John Wayne. Beginning in 1932, Pierce and his wife, Joan (the daughter of Burroughs whom Pierce had married), voiced Tarzan and Jane in a nationally syndicated radio program that ran for two years. Pierce quit the show to do this and other films. The cards as well as any paper for this classic serial has always been exceedingly scarce! Mint.
