The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is based on the 1927 novel by B. Traven, a mysterious author whose real identity remains debated. Director John Huston acquired the rights in the 1940s and was drawn to the tale's mix of adventure and psychological tension. Filmed on location in Durango, Mexico, Huston aimed for authenticity, capturing the harsh environment that shapes the characters' journey. It won three Academy Awards: Walter Huston earned Best Supporting Actor for his role as the wise prospector Dobbs, while John Huston received awards for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. Backed to linen, restoration has addressed splits, separation, chips to the fold junctions and borders, as well as some tears, and some portions of the borders have been airbrushed.
