Humphrey Bogart was finally given the top billing he'd worked so hard for in this, one of the finest film noirs ever made. This was the third time that Dashiell Hammett's riveting book would be translated into a film (the first time in 1931 and the second in 1936 under the title Satan Met a Lady), and the third time was charmed, as the screenplay by John Huston would be nominated for an Oscar. It was also Huston's debut as a director and Huston was delighted that George Raft turned down the role so that Bogart could star. After the film's release, Bogart would become the king of the Warner lot and he would never surrender top billing again. The film has literally become (to borrow a line from the film itself) "the stuff that dreams are made of" and the posters for this title are still among the most coveted in the hobby. This title card captures Bogart, not as Sam Spade, but as Roy Mad Dog Earle from Bogart's prior hit, High Sierra. It was common practice for Warners' to use images of their stars from their other hit films as they felt audiences would recognize them that way and want to see that same type of performance again. What the audiences actually got was a whole new Bogart, cynical and sharp, ready to cross the line of morality in the name of justice. This title card has had professional restoration to address a stain in the lower left edge and just a bit in the rest of the left border, a half inch tear in the lower border that goes just to the left of the Warner Bros. logo, and to a three inch tear in the upper right light green background. Fine/Very Fine.
