Description

The Maltese Falcon (Warner Brothers, 1941). Insert (14" X 36").
Perhaps the best detective film ever made and certainly one of the best film noirs ever made, John Huston's riveting adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's novel found Humphrey Bogart in the role of Sam Spade, private detective. Audiences loved his hardboiled hero, and the film's success pulled Bogart out of B-picture gangster obscurity and propelled the actor into becoming the highest paid star in the world. Peter Lorre, Mary Astor, and first timer Sydney Greenstreet rounded out the cast of shady characters. Warner Brothers didn't have high hopes for this picture, so due to the success of High Sierra, they felt the posters should depict Bogart as he appeared in that film, as the cold-blooded killer, Mad Dog Roy Earle. There is a light bottom right corner bend, smudging in the bottom right corner, a small tear in the bottom border, light crimping in the right border, and a minor crease in Mary Astor's image. There are small tears in the right and upper borders, some of which have archival tape on the verso. Folded, Very Fine.
