Description

The Maltese Falcon (Warner Brothers, 1931). Title Lobby Card (11" X 14").
For the first time, Heritage is thrilled to present an incredibly rare, complete set of lobby cards from the original adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's most famous work, each offered individually and in fantastic condition. This exquisite title lobby card, only sold once before at Heritage, features a tense shot of headliner Bebe Daniels squaring off with Otto Matieson, certainly a tantalizing preview for audiences of the day. Though only thirty years old, Daniels was already a twenty year veteran of the silver screen, having appeared in films since she was only nine years old. This version of the novel casts Latin lover Ricardo Cortez as a smug and cavalier version of detective Sam Spade, grinning his way through confrontations with police and thugs alike. Thoroughly a pre-Code affair, Warner Brothers attempted to procure a re-release of this Roy Del Ruth picture, only to find themselves foiled by the puritanical standards of the Production Code. Undeterred, the studio put out two more versions of Hammett's story, first with Satan Met a Lady starring Bette Davis, and then the classic Humphrey Bogart vehicle produced in 1941. For decades, this original adaptation laid locked away until after 1966, when the studio finally gained the freedom to re-release the picture under the title Dangerous Female. Of truly exceptional quality, this scarcely seen title card has received a grade of 9.4, Near Mint.
