Description
The Lady from Shanghai (Columbia, 1947). Fine on Linen. Three Sheet (40.5" X 78.75").Then husband and wife Rita Hayworth and Orson Welles star in this innovative film noir, which Welles himself cowrote and directed. Hayworth delivers another captivating femme fatale performance as Elsa Bannister, wife of an unscrupulous criminal defense attorney, whose romantic attentions lead sailor Michael O'Hara down the road to ruin. For the part, Welles radically changed his wife's look, cutting "Gilda's" long auburn hair and bleaching it an optic blonde. This transformation infuriated Columbia studios head Harry Cohn, who exclaimed that the change had "ruined" the actress, just one of the executive's many gripes with Welles' initial director's cut of Lady. However, history would vindicate Welles, both in terms of filmmaking and cosmetology, as this gorgeous large format poster is a testament to just how alluring Hayworth could be. Printed in two sections designed to overlap, the poster was backed to linen. Sensitive restoration and touchup has addressed fold wear, separation, tears, creasing, chips, and a missing segment of the top blank border. The borders, purple background field, and areas of the red field were airbrushed, with additional hand touchup applied to the blank red area around Hayworth's head.
