Description
Sunset Boulevard (Paramount, 1950). One Sheet (27" X 41") Style A.Anyone considering a career in Hollywood should take a close look at director Billy Wilder's depiction of celebrity and the abusive showbiz "machine" in this dark classic. Even more, this poster, featuring a washed-up, scorned Gloria Swanson on the edge of madness, might make one rethink any acting aspirations. A film noir gem, Sunset Boulevard concerns a writer (William Holden) who plays the confidant and companion to an aging silent film actress (Swanson) in order to further his career. The film also cast other major stars from the silent era including Erich von Stroheim, Buster Keaton and the director Cecil B. DeMille. And although the film is considered a noir masterpiece, it is also part horror film as we see Norma Desmond's (Swanson) downward spiral into insanity. Swanson was nominated for an Oscar, as were Holden and von Stroheim. Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett won the Academy Award for Best Screenplay. Posters from the film are always attractive to collectors, and this example has been restored to address minor signs of handling: touchup to crossfolds, pinholes in the corners, and light scuffing in the bottom red background. Bold, saturated color makes the poster one to have! Very Fine on Linen.
