Description
In a Lonely Place (Columbia, 1951). Italian 2 - Fogli (39.5" X 55.5") Anselmo Ballester Artwork.Humphrey Bogart portrays a self-destructive screenwriter in Nicholas Ray's bleak, dark tale of self-loathing and degradation, set against the backdrop of a cynical Hollywood. The story begins when Dixon Steele (Bogart) becomes involved in the murder of a hat-check girl (Martha Stewart) who works at his favorite nightclub. A would-be starlet (Gloria Grahame) provides him with a solid alibi and they soon begin a romance, in spite of her lingering concerns that the troubled, often violent Steele might just be the killer after all. During the filming, Ray and Grahame were quietly going through a divorce. They were married a little over 4 years with one child. Producer Robert Lord forced Grahame to sign a contract that stated, "My husband shall be entitled to direct, control, advise, instruct and even command my actions during the hours from 9 AM to 6 PM, every day except Sunday...I acknowledge that in every conceivable situation his will and judgment shall be considered superior to mine and shall prevail." She also could not "nag, cajole, tease or in any other feminine fashion seek to distract or influence him." There is touchup to the folds, pinholes in the borders and background, a minor tear in the lower right border, and a small chip in the left lower border. Dramatic artwork by Anselmo Ballester. Very Fine on Linen.
