Description

Gilda (Columbia, 1946). French Double Grande (62.75" X 92.75") Boris Grinsson Artwork.
Renowned French designer Boris Grinsson knocked it out of the park with this design of Rita Hayworth in her most important role. As Gilda, Hayworth portrayed the ultimate femme fatale, luring men to their demise with her charm and irresistible beauty. In this particular case, one of the men was her ex (Glenn Ford), and the other is the man who's now her husband and her ex's employer (George Macready). An atmosphere of jealousy and doom threatens to tear down the two men's business and personal relationship as Gilda sings, dances and provokes them into a final confrontation. Gilda was a highlight of the film noir genre, a genre epitomized by this incredible image. The poster combines both aspects of the US campaign; that of Gilda reclining amidst the swirling smoke of her cigarette and another image of her being slapped by Ford for her treachery. No doubt about it, this is one of the best posters ever created for this quintessential film noir title. It looks lovely after professional restoration has addressed fold wear with chips, staining into the image area, and some creasing and tears. The borders and title have been airbrushed, and there is color enhancement within the image. There is some creasing in the background still visible, and there are small bits of post-restoration paper loss in the interior. Fine on Linen.
