Gilda (Columbia, 1946). Fine- on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41") Style B."There NEVER was a woman like Gilda!" And there has rarely been a movie poster more consistently coveted than this quintessential film noir one sheet graced with a smoldering image of the ultimate femme fatale, Rita Hayworth. She is Gilda, caught between her new husband (George Macready) and her former flame (Glenn Ford), against the backdrop of a Buenos Aires casino. This is the film that sealed Hayworth's legendary Hollywood status with her signature moment singing (or most likely lip-syncing) "Put the Blame on Mame," swathed in the now iconic black satin gown by designer Jean Louis (it even has its own Wikipedia page) and long, sensual gloves. For the day, the film's erotic overtones pushed the limits of the Production Code. Authenticity was important to director Charles Vidor, so much so that when Hayworth slaps Ford on both cheeks, she actually did hit him, resulting in two broken teeth. Posters from this film are ardently sought for the lovely image of Hayworth, and this iconic style B one sheet is particularly revered. She stands provocatively, and somewhat defiantly, cigarette in hand, head tilted to the side. There was touchup to the folds for fold wear with some misfolding. The poster was trimmed along the lower border beneath the printed text, slightly into the black background along the sides, and by 1" into the background across the top. The title credits and cast list has been retouched, as have been the borders to address toning. Some toning is still apparent in Hayworth's dress.
