    Description

Faust (UFA, 1926). German Promotional Item (9.25" X 12.25") DS, Karl Michel Artwork.
Cinematic genius F. W. Murnau was one of Germany's most important directors during the 1920s. Best known as the director of Nosferatu (1922), he also filmed an early version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920) and the brilliant character study Der Letzte Mann (1924), as well as this stunning adaptation of the Faust legend. Gosta Ekman is Faust, an aged seeker of knowledge and pleasure, while Emil Jannings plays Mephisto, the demonic servant who answers Faust's summons. Karl Michel, more known for his bold expressionist and cubist etchings, reproduces a very medieval style for this illustration, resembling a colored woodcut. A first-time offer at Heritage, this beautiful country of origin piece is very well preserved, and comes from the famous Ufa-Palast am Zoo theater in Berlin. It only displays slight fold wear and staple holes at the left edge, and the verso shows a bit of ink transfer and some faint smudges. Folded, Very Fine.

    Estimate: $1,200 - $2,400.
