DescriptionThe Tin Woodman of Oz by L. Frank Baum (Riley & Lee Company, 1918). Fine/Very Fine. Autographed First Edition Hardcover Book (288 Pages, 7" X 9.25") John R. Neill Artwork.
Few writers ever achieve the everlasting success enjoyed by the great Frank L. Baum, famed author of the The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Beloved by children and adults for generations, Baum penned fourteen Oz novels in total, spawning numerous stage and screen adaptions of his books, including MGM's smash hit 1939 musical starring Judy Garland. But, as often happens with long running series, interest in the books had waned over the years, a trend reversed by the publishing of this particularly popular installment. The Tin Woodsman of Oz, detailing the backstory and further adventures of the titular character as he searches for his long lost love, rekindled a massive public interest in the books and revived sales of the entire series. Sadly, this was to be the last Oz novel published during Baum's lifetime, as he suffered a stroke the following year before the printing of his final two books. This incredibly rare first edition of the novel has been signed by the major players of the 1939 movie, including Judy Garland, Tin Man actor Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Ray Bolger, Frank Morgan, Billie Burke, and Margaret Hamilton. Offered for the first time at Heritage, the novel shows such signs of age as slight edge and spine wear, a bit of fraying at the corners of the cover, a couple of spine cracks, thin surface scuffs, and minor tears. There are a some mild stains and smudges, including a few in the interior pages. The book's flyleaf has paper lifts and paper remnants, possibly from a removed book plate. Fine/Very Fine.
Estimate: $4,000 - $8,000.
