Description

The Temple of Venus (Fox, 1923). Fine- on Linen. One Sheet (28.5" X 41").
After setting up a string of successful nickelodeons in the very early 1910s, William Fox decided it was time to make his mark as a filmmaker. Setting up shop in California, Fox had great success with his films, especially the ones starring the exotic Theda Bara, which earned millions of dollars for his studio. In 1923, he borrowed Universal star Mary Philbin for his fantasy romance film The Temple of Venus. With the industrialization of the city and modern living changing many people's ideas of romance, the film's predominant theme was that there is always beauty and love in the world, but one must find it in the right place. One such place was California's Santa Cruz Island, where the film was shot, and idyllic scenes of nature were featured prominently, as well as many scantily clad beautiful ladies. This breathtaking and extremely rare one-sheet poster for The Temple of Venus highlights the films mythological elements, with a scene of Neptune surrounded by beautiful mermaids bringing him treasures. Touchup has been applied to folds, edge wear, fold separation, chips in borders and folds. The V in Venus has been heavily painted, and touchup has been applied to the N and S. The linen has been trimmed to the borders.
