    Certainly found in the pantheon of monumental horror films, The Golem is also considered a landmark of early German Expressionism. Somber, doleful cinematography and highly stylized sets put this film in a class of its own during the early 20th century. From actor-director Paul Wegener, it was inspired by a mythical creature of Jewish lore. Set in medieval Prague, the film depicts a rabbi (Albert Steinruck) who devises a plan to protect his people from the Emperor's order of expulsion. He creates a clay monster, called a Golem, to save the day. And lest romance be forgotten, a love triangle is added between the rabbi's daughter (Lyda Salmanova), the rabbi's assistant (Ernst Deutsch), and a messenger for the Emperor (Lathar Menthel). Heritage is thrilled to offer for only the second time a title card from this historically important film, one of a very small number known to exist. The imposing Golem (Wegener himself) can be seen embarking on a furious rampage, lumbering about, distressed maiden in his arms. Not only is the title card almost impossible to find, this one is in outstanding condition. CGC graded as a 9.2. Near Mint-.
