The Golem (Paramount, 1920). Lobby Card (11" X 14").
Paul Wegener, a writer, actor and director, is widely credited with the evolution of German expressionist cinema in the early 20th century. The Golem was inspired by a mythical creature of Jewish legend. Wegener plays the title character, and is seen on this extremely scarce lobby card (a Heritage first), as the clay monster creation of a Medieval rabbi (Albert Steinruck) living in Prague. Paper for this monumental horror picture is rarely found, so this image of the Golem is quite a find. Determined to save his people from the ill-treatment of the Emperor, the rabbi affixes a charm in the shape of a star to the monster's clothing, which brings him to life. This was an interesting choice, as historically Jews were often made to wear yellow badges, later taking the form of a star during the Nazi regime. Perhaps just a coincidence, but it's interesting to note Wegener remained in Germany under the Third Reich as something of a double agent. He acted in propaganda films for the Nazis, all the while donating money to resistance groups and harboring vulnerable people in his apartment. Light handling includes pinholes in the corners.
