Description

Lost Horizon (Columbia, 1937). Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 40.75") Advance, James Montgomery Flagg Artwork.
Frank Capra's Lost Horizon is a groundbreaking fantasy-adventure film based on James Hilton's novel of the same name. The story follows British diplomat Robert Conway, played by Ronald Colman, as he and a group of stranded passengers discover the utopian valley of Shangri-La hidden deep in the Himalayas. To promote the film, Columbia Pictures launched an extensive publicity campaign, producing five different one sheets, including this distinctive advance poster by legendary illustrator James Montgomery Flagg, best known for creating Uncle Sam. Flagg's stunning artwork, designed to resemble a matted painting with beveled image and title areas, captures Colman escaping into the tranquil beauty of Shangri-La and serves as his primary key art for the film. Exceptionally rare and considered one of the most unique and fascinating promotional pieces ever produced, this poster is being offered by Heritage for only the second time in our history. Despite production challenges and extensive editing, Lost Horizon took home the Oscars for Best Art Direction and Best Film Editing at the 10th annual Academy Awards, remaining a timeless testament to Capra's illustrious career. Minor touchup has addressed various flaws throughout including fold wear, pinholes and pinhole tears/chips, creases, small crossfold separation, a few small chips, and tears. Some of those flaws, as well as light toning and a few stains, remain somewhat visible.
