Description

La Belle et la Bete (DisCina, 1946). French Grande (45.75" X 62.25") Jean-Denis Malcles Artwork.
As beautiful as the film itself, this country-of-origin French grande is a sight to behold. Artist Jean-Denis Malcles supplies the touch of enchantment here, inspired by the picture that was so effortlessly brought to the screen by director Jean Cocteau in 1946. Although known primarily as a poet and a painter during the filming of La Belle et la Bete (Beauty and the Beast), Cocteau instantly earned the distinction as one of the finest French directors of his era after the film's successful release. As a further testament to the director's creative instincts, post-war shortages forced Cocteau to use several different types of film stock during the making of the picture. Rather that considering this a frustrating flaw, as many directors might, he believed the use of differing visual textures added to the picture's atmospheric effect. Josette Day and Jean Marais are endearing as the title characters, and La Belle et la Bete is still one of the best French films ever made. Already a beautiful poster in remarkable shape, touchup has been applied to the folds with small crossfold chips. There are a few thin post-restoration creases. Very Fine on Linen.
