    Description

    Faust (UFA, 1926). German Lobby Cards (2) (9.5" " X 11.75" and 8.5" X 11").
In the 1920s and through the 1940s, German theaters used double weight photos as lobby cards, like this hand tinted example. Emil Jannings stars as the Devil's henchman, Memphisto in this magnificent silent adaptation of the ancient legend of Faust (Gosta Ekman). This masterpiece is directed by German Expressionist genius F.W. Murnau, who creates a dark and realistic world where Faust trades his soul for youth. This timeless tale has been taken on by writers through the centuries, most famously by Christopher Marlowe and Goethe. It was this brilliant film which secured Murnau's reputation, and led to his move to Hollywood (along with Jannings) and a contract with Fox Studios, where his next film was the Academy Award winning Sunrise. Offered here is a very rare original color tinted German photo from this landmark production, with a spectacular image of Ekman and Jannings. It has the UFA logo in the bottom corner, a small stain in the bottom background and in the right border, and a light scratch across the middle. The other photo has a Karl Schlemm credit stamp and a studio stamp on the verso and the embossed seal of the Filmprufstelle Berlin Zugenlassen in the top right. Fine/Very Fine.
