Description
Faust (MGM-UFA, 1926). Very Fine+ on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41").This macabre American one sheet showcases Emil Jannings at his diabolical best as the world's most infamous portrayal of Mephisto. From one of the greatest masters of horror during the silent era, and best known as the director of Nosferatu (1922), F.W. Murnau's Faust is no doubt one of the greatest films of the supernatural and the most memorable German folktale ever adapted for the screen. Drawing from older traditions of the legendary tale in addition to the 1808 Goethe two-version classic, the film took a staggering six months to produce and a massive two million marks to make. A landscape of nightmares thanks to Murnau's bold imagination and unique film techniques which included side-by-side camerawork and double-exposure, several different negatives of the picture were assembled to meet the demand for prints both in Germany and abroad. A tale about a man who sells his soul to the devil in exchange for knowledge and power, Faust would be the last foreign film for the director before signing with Fox. Starring Gosta Ekman, Camilla Horn, Frida Richard, William Dieterle, Yvette Guilbert, Eric Barclay, Hanna Ralph, and Werner Fuetterer. Unparalleled on many levels, the film is one of the boldest and most imaginative works in cinema that helped redefine what black and white cinematography could accomplish. It is considered to be one of the greatest visual achievements of the silent era and perhaps the best horror film of all time. No doubt a favorite among German Expressionist fans and dark cinema aficionados, this stone litho one sheet has wonderful artwork of Faust being tempted by the devil. This one-sheet is offered for the first time by Heritage and is almost certainly the only surviving example of this poster, and movie material from this silent masterpiece is nearly impossible to find. Sold nearly fifteen years ago at Heritage for over $23,000, the poster has been professionally backed on linen receiving light touchup to the folds, pinpoint crossfold separation and a very small tear in the top border. A wonderful genre piece representative of classic cinematic history.
