    Description

    Edison Moving Picture Show (Edison Manufacturing Co., c. 1900). Posters (2) (20" X 28" & 21" X 28").
These extremely early movie posters are not dated, but several suppositions can be made to place them into a historical context. Thomas Edison began distributing short films in 1890, typically focused on scenes of everyday life, such as blacksmiths at work, workers leaving a factory, and a watermelon eating contest. By 1910, however, he began promoting specific stories, such as the first film version of Frankenstein. It's also worth noting the odd size of these posters. In December 1908, Edison, along with several other studios, formed the Motion Picture Patents Company, also known as the Edison Trust. The group controlled the licensing of films and film equipment, effectively putting the squeeze on the smaller, independent studios and virtually controlling the market. Another effect the Trust had was the standardization of poster sizes, including the one sheet, the three sheet, the six sheet, and the 24 sheet. The off-size of these posters, and the fact that they promote general "Motion Picture Subjects" instead of named features, leads us to believe they were produced during the first decade of the twentieth century. Boasting beautiful images, these century-old posters are in considerably good shape, showing edge wear with creasing, small tears, and some foxing in the borders. The folded poster has fold wear with a horizontal separation that has cellophane tape on the verso, and the rolled poster has paper loss in the right side of the bottom border. Rolled and Folded, Fine/Very Fine.

    Estimate: $1,000 - $2,000.
