    Description

Duel in the Sun by Joseph "Mac" McMillan Johnson (United Artists, 1945). Very Fine+ on Board. Original Gouache Concept Rendering on Paper (13.75" X 11") in Matt and Frame (21.75" X 19") with Signed Card.
A piece like none other, this beautiful rendering by Joseph "Mac" McMillan Johnson does an excellent job of capturing the vast, open desert scenery found in David O. Selznick's production of Duel in the Sun. Beginning with the historical epic Gone With the Wind in 1939, Johnson worked as an illustrator for Selznick on such movies as The Paradine Case and Portrait of Jennie, which won Johnson an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Included is a sheet of backing paper for the frame with a signed and inscribed card from the artist attached, addressed to 2nd Unit Photographer Charles P. Boyle, that reads, "Charley, Remember the day you shot this one. Mac. Duel in the Sun '45." Full of gorgeous yet eerie shading, the artwork itself shows few indications of handling, with only some soft surface scuffs and very minor surface wear. The board it is mounted on has some surface paper loss and strips of cellophane and masking tape on the verso.

    Estimate: $1,500 - $3,000.
