    Description

When the Earth Trembled (Lubin, 1913). French Four Panel (124" X 93").
Among one of the first disaster films ever made, this Sigmund Lubin production is thought to be the first to portray the San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fire, and used innovations in special effects interspersed with actual newsreels to simulate the powerful quake. The set pieces took a total of four months to build, an unheard of amount of time back in the day for a single scene. All of this considered, lead star Ethel Clayton puts on an impressive performance, in more ways than one. Knowing that the complicated quake set could only be used once, the actress refused to break character and soldiered on through the scene after a loose chandelier fell directly onto her face. Sold for the first time at Heritage, this stone litho poster looks great after professional restoration has addressed chipping in the folds, tears and creasing in the borders and interior. A section of paper loss towards the lower right corner has been replaced. The poster still shows unrestored pinholes in the borders and interior, stains and smudges in the borders, and there has been post-restoration cracking of the paper. Fine+ on Linen.
