Description

    Way Down East (United Artists, 1920). Lobby Cards (4) (11" X 14").
If you've never seen Lillian Gish's performance in Way Down East, you simply haven't experienced the best the silent era has to offer. Her work here should be required viewing for any aspiring young actress. Gish moves flawlessly from fragile and innocent country girl, to ecstatic bride, to betrayed "wife," to bereaved unwed mother, and finally a matured woman..and all without uttering a single word. These four cards are some of the best moments in the film and only hint at her brilliance. There's a scene card where Gish has gone to her rich relatives in Boston to ask for money. That's a real top society maven, Mrs. Morgan Belmont, in the red dress. It was her only film appearance. Another great card has noted lecturer, actor, writer, etc., Burr McIntosh, just about to toss Gish out into the snow storm while Richard Barthelmess tries to console her. And there is Lowell Sherman, as the rich cad, seducing Gish with one of the best pick-up lines in film history..."In your beauty lives again... Elaine...the lily maid...love dreaming at Astolat." Three of the cards have light foxing in the top border. One has a small tear in the top border, and one has dust shadows in three borders. There is slight edge wear throughout. Fine/Very Fine.
