Description

Traffic in Souls (Universal Film Manufacturing, 1913). One Sheet (28.25" X 42").
Although this film is little known today, it occupies an important place in motion picture history. Traffic in Souls is one of the first feature length films produced, running at 88 minutes, and made the fledgling Universal Film Manufacturing Company enough money to expand their operation. The film is a compelling drama about a woman who, with the help of her police officer boyfriend Burke (Matt Moore), goes undercover in the white slavery ring headed by a respectable businessman that has kidnapped her sister. It cost Universal $5,700 to produce (far less than the $200,000 claimed in studio press material), and returned more than $450,000 - thanks in large part to its lurid subject matter - making the studio a force with which to be reckoned. After the success of this picture, studio head Carl Laemmle decided to relocate his operation to the West Coast, and a movie dynasty was born. Also, although many movies had adapted plays or books in the past, this film, the first American production to tackle the concept of sex, was the very first movie to be turned into a novel. This incredible stone litho one sheet is one of two known styles, both of which are quite rare. Touchup has been applied to the folds, with slight tears and minor chipping in the vertical fold. There is a small repaired tear in the upper vertical fold, and the linen has been trimmed to the edges. The masa paper is lifting from the linen all around the poster. Very Fine- on Linen.
