    Description

    Titanic (Sübverleih, 1950). German A1 (23.5" X 33") Hoff Artwork.
This 1943 motion picture version of the 1912 sinking of the RMS Titanic was a German propaganda film made during World War II, commissioned by Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. The production of the film was wracked with problems from start to finish, including a postponement of the movie's premier when the Royal Air Force bombed the theater the night before its first showing. Definitely shown for a short time in German-occupied Europe beginning in 1943, some historians believe the film did see a very limited release in Germany. However, Goebbels would soon personally shelve the film himself, as he was concerned it might weaken, rather than boost the morale of the country's citizens. The film's goal was to use the demise of the Titanic as a way to discredit British and American capitalism, and instead extol the selflessness and valor of German men. However, scenes of British and French passengers searching for their loved ones through locked gates and a chain link fence were deemed too similar to what was actually happening in concentration camps, and Goebbels later banned the film entirely. During what was a highly tense filming process, director Herbert Selpin was reported to the Gestapo by his friend and co-writer of the script, Walter Zerlett-Olfenius, questioned by Goebbels, and within 24 hours found dead, hanging in a prison cell. An uncredited Werner Klingler was brought in to finish directing the plagued production. This poster is in incredible condition, showing only light edge wear, slight fold wear and separations, and a few faint creases. Folded, Very Fine+.
