George Bancroft masters the role of a ruthless stock manipulator in this twisted crime thriller filmed a few months before the catastrophic Wall Street Crash of 1929. Bancroft publicly taunts his hated rival (Paul Lukas), who gets his revenge by starting an affair with Bancroft's social climbing wife (Olga Baclanova), an indiscretion witnessed by the enterprising housekeeper (Nancy Carroll). Originally created as a silent movie, Paramount re-filmed the entirety of this moral melodrama with sound, making it George Bancroft's first talking picture. This rare title card is a first time offer from Heritage. The card shows toning on the borders with a bit into the interior on an otherwise beautiful condition piece.
