It is with tremendous pride that Heritage presents the breathtaking style A one sheet for Song of Songs. Marlene Dietrich plays the embodiment of innocence in her first role without director/mentor/Svengali Josef von Sternberg. Rouben Mamoulian assumed the directorial reins instead, guiding this story of an orphaned peasant (Dietrich) from the German countryside who travels to Berlin to stay with her aunt. Of course, the big city quickly exploits her naivete. Becoming a nude model (Dietrich cannot stay frumpy for long), she falls in love with a struggling artist (Brian Aherne), but is unable to resist the marriage proposal of a hedonistic baron (Lionel Atwill). As in Blonde Venus, her previous film, Dietrich's character establishes her independence by becoming a cabaret singer, but the past lingers like a von Sternberg shadow. This exquisite and extremely rare stone litho one sheet is a sight to behold, Dietrich glowing against a deep onyx background. Mounted on linen, the poster is display-ready after touchup to the folds, a tear from the bottom border into Dietrich's left hand, one in the bottom border into her right finger, a 2" tear just below "Picture" at the bottom, a 1 1/2" tear in the top border into the black background, and a 4" crease at the bottom left. Opportunities to acquire such a beautiful poster are few and far between, and collectors are unlikely to see this fantastic poster resurface any time soon. Very Fine on Linen.
