Description
The Last Command (Paramount, 1928). Insert (14" X 36").In this stirring drama, Emil Jannings plays Grand Duke Sergius Alexander, an aristocrat reduced to poverty during the Russian Revolution. Relocating to Hollywood and earning a scant living as a movie extra, he encounters old enemy Leo Andreyev (William Powell) who is now a successful film director. Andreyev hires Alexander to recreate his downfall in the revolution, a decision that results in a staggering emotional climax. This incredible film captured a Best Actor Oscar for Jannings; the first actor to ever win the legendary award. The film was also directed by Josef von Sternberg who would go on to become one of the most influential directors working in Hollywood. Vivid colors and a striking image make this window card a treasure of the silent screen era. The piece is in excellent condition, showing only pinholes in the title credits, bottom right edge wear, faint writing in the bottom border, a smudge in the bottom left, a dust shadow in the top border and a tear in the left border. Rolled, Very Fine-.
