The Indian Raid (1911). British Three Sheet (40" X 88").James Young Deer (1876-1946) was believed to be the first Native American filmmaker/producer in Hollywood. He began his cinematic career in 1909 in New York, playing in several one-reeler Westerns for companies such as Kalem, Lubin, Vitagraph and Biograph. In 1910, Young Deer was able to direct for Pathé Frères. Wanting to enhance the realism in films about the Old West, the studio sent Young Deer to Los Angeles to make Indian-themed pictures. His wife, actress Lillian St. Cyr, also known as "Red Wing," acted in many of his films. Young Deer acted in, wrote, or directed approximately 150 silent movies at Pathé's West Coast Studio, and is credited for his positive portrayals of Native Americans. Offered here is a very rare British three sheet printed by Stafford & Co., Ltd. lithographers near Nottingham. It was made during Young Deer's time with Pathé, and most likely was distributed by General Film Company. It's difficult to believe the poster is over 100 years old, as it has retained excellent color saturation and displays very little wear. The piece was printed in three sections, which show small fold separations, light stains in the borders and on the verso, tears in the borders (some with tape on the verso) and creasing. A glorious Western sunset fades into the silhouette of a rocky mountainscape, as a chieftain adorned in full regalia surveys an oncoming wagon train from a hidden vantage point. A trusted warrior crouches at his side, ready to take aim. Whether you are a silent film aficionado, lover of Old West nostalgia, or just simply appreciate beautiful works of art, this poster will make a stunning display piece that's sure to turn heads! Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
