Description

The Blue Angel (UFA, 1930). Fine+ on Linen. French Double Grande (58" X 88.5") Rene Peron Artwork.
The Blue Angel, a 1930 German drama directed by Josef con Sternberg, is an important part of film history for a few reasons. For one, it is the first feature-length German full-talkie ever produced. Also, The Blue Angel features the breakthrough performance of Marlene Dietrich which catapulted her into international stardom. This exceedingly rare French poster for The Blue Angel is offered here at Heritage for the first time. With stunning artwork by Rene Peron, the stone litho poster depicts the penultimate scene where Emil Jannings, as a disgraced former professor and current clown in a cabaret show, lashes out at Marlene Dietrich. The poster displays beautifully after professional restoration was applied to correct edge and fold wear, creases, tears, fold separations, and chips. There were also paper lifts on the verso of the poster prior to backing on linen. The worst of the wear was in the title area and around the edges of the poster, and the main images were in generally nice condition. The border have been airbrushed, as have the title and much of the lighter portions of the image. Still visible are some scuffs and smudges as well as a few slight stains.
