The Birth of a Nation (Epoch Producing, R-1921). Fine+ on Linen. One Sheet (28.25" X 41").D. W. Griffith's epic tale of the struggles of the South during the Civil War, and the later Reconstruction period, is considered a landmark of cinema history. It was the earliest full-length feature; prior films had a length of less than one hour. The film is still considered quite controversial, with its benevolent treatment of the Ku Klux Klan, racist attitudes towards African Americans, and the depiction of slavery as a benign necessity. Although becoming an overnight blockbuster, many audience members protested the film, and the newly formed National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) staged ultimately unsuccessful demonstrations to have the film banned from theaters. Despite the film's controversy, its greatest strengths such as, innovative narrative, suspenseful editing and open frames, complex staging, and multiple planes of action, changed the course of cinematic history. Although the film's original release was in 1915, it was in continuous release for many years. Offered here is a stone litho one sheet from 1921. Professional restoration has corrected several signs of usage such as edge and fold wear, fold separations, creases, and pinholes. There were also small tears as well as chips in the borders with smaller chips in the folds. The left border has been airbrushed, and some of the touchup at the folds is beginning to crack. There are post-restoration dust shadows at some of the edges. These peripheral issues do little to detract from the overall presentation of this wonderful stone litho piece. Fine+ on Linen.
