DescriptionShanghai Express by Werckmeister (1947). Very Fine-. Signed Original Mixed Media German Concept Artwork on Illustration Paper (16.25" X 23.25").
Master storyteller Joseph von Sternberg directs this thrilling drama about political intrigue and lost love aboard the Shanghai Express, traveling through war-torn China. Marlene Dietrich is unforgettable as Shanghai Lily, a lost woman beautifully shot in shadow and smoke. A one of a kind item making its first appearance at Heritage, this gouache, graphite, and ink piece has been signed and dated by artist Werckmeister, who skillfully depicts Dietrich, Clive Brook, and Anna May Wong on this conceptual poster illustration. Dietrich's radiant image marks a focal point of this composition, as the German actress was much loved by the people of her home country. Signs of handling include light edge wear, a minor border tear, and unobtrusive stains. There are a few pinholes, which may be from the artistic process. On the verso, there are sketches of other possible poster designs, including Shanghai Express, Broadway Melody, and Spies. Very Fine-.
Estimate: $1,000 - $2,000.
