Description

Salome (Fox Film, 1918). Very Fine+ on Linen. French Half Grande (30" X 46").
Salomé (presumed lost; 1937 Fox Vault fire), the 1918 J. Gordon Edwards directed Biblical melodrama 'The seductress who sowed sin in ancient Galilee, whose tempestuous blood has traced a scarlet thread through the centuries'; 'A Theda Bara Super Production'; based on the Biblical story of Salome, King Herod, and John the Baptist. Starring Theda Bara - 'Serpent of the Nile' and 'Siren supreme of the screen' - was not the offspring of an Arab sheik and a French woman nor of Egyptian of royal lineage as Fox publicists claimed, but born Theodosia Goodman in Cincinnati, Ohio - G. Raymond Nye (King Herod), Alan Roscoe (John the Baptist), Herbert Hayes, and Bertram Grassby also star in the film. Owing to the inadvertent exposure of Bara's breasts in initial cuts of the film, objections were made that children were attending showings. In response, director Edwards suggested that his fictional version of the Biblical scenario could be considered an allegorical pastiche, and not directly inspired by scripture or pinned to the morals of its pages. Salomé was subject to restrictions and cuts by censorship boards though it remained a sensation. "Miss Bara wore an elaborate 'costume'... rich and glittering and scant." As seen in this luxurious original issue French half-grande, Bara was indeed an exotic personage whose incandescent repose is one of the immortal personality images of silent cinema, seductively alluring. This is the first offering by Heritage. The condition of the poster before professional restoration was nearly ideal, with very light fold wear and pinholes. A scant touchup was required to the folds, and an enlarged pinhole to the background left.
