Description

    Pepe le Moko (Colosseum, 1946). First Post-War Release Italian 4 - Foglio (54.25" X 75.5").
Top French matinee idol Jean Gabin stars in this excellent drama set in the underworld of the Casbah of Algiers. Gabin is the charming and sly jewel thief Pepe le Moko who is untouchable as long as he stays hidden in the maze of friendly neighborhoods where he's a hero. This is much to the chagrin of Inspector Meunier (Rene Berferon), but Pepe's fate is sealed once he falls in love with the sophisticated Gaby Gould (Mireille Balin), who is used in a trap set by the police. A gripping tale of cat and mouse, this picture, directed by Julien Duvivier, garnered much critical acclaim and is considered one of the earliest precursors of film noir. It was remade in the following year, recreated nearly identically scene by scene (except for the ending), as Algiers, with Charles Boyer and Hedy Lamarr. Posters for this film don't appear often, this Italian 4-foglio being only the second one Heritage has brought to auction. Artist R. Francili brilliantly designed poster is fraught with tension and evoking the feel of a sultry North African night. Touchup has been applied to chips in the borders and center cross folds, and tears in the top section and bottom credit area. There are light scratches and small cracks in the black areas, but overall, a stunning work of art. Fine- on Linen.
