    Description

Of Human Bondage (RKO, 1934). Window Card (14" X 22").
Leslie Howard, upset that an American was cast in British writer Somerset Maugham's semi-autobiography, would read a book over in the corner, listlessly pitching Bette Davis his lines while her closeups were being shot. When informed "..Howard, this kid is running away with the picture..", he became much more involved. But you've only to see this gorgeous window card to know to whom this film really belonged. It was Davis' voracious slutty harridan that stole the show. Here she stares not at Howard, but at the next man in her life, while he can do little but hang on for dear life. It's a terrific image of a young Davis who springboarded to major stardom with this role, just missing an Oscar when Warners refused to mount a publicity campaign, due to this being a loan out to RKO. There is a punch hole in the top imprint area with no missing paper, a small smudge in the title, a tiny surface paper loss in the lower left corner, and a small tear in the left border. Very Fine.
