Description

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (Columbia, 1939). Title Lobby Card and Lobby Card (11" X 14").
A rare and exhilarating opportunity is presented in this lot, with the two very best lobby cards from one of America's favorite movies directed by Frank Capra. James Stewart would win the hearts of audiences and score one of his five Academy Award nominations playing a naive freshman senator, a role that also secured his place in the pantheon of Hollywood greats. Though he played many memorable characters during his fifty year-plus career, it is Senator Jefferson Smith, perhaps next only to It's a Wonderful Life's George Bailey, with which Stewart is most identified. Co-star Jean Arthur, who had also teamed with Stewart the previous year in You Can't Take it with You, has been called "the quintessential comedic leading lady" by film historian Robert Osborne. The title card has pinholes, light creasing in the borders, rounded corners, and slight edge wear. There is a small tear at the top border with paper tape on the verso. The portrait card has slight surface scuffs, staple holes, corner bends, a small tear in the right border, and there is archival and paper tape on the verso along the edges. These highly desirable cards capture the essence of Stewart's charm and would be a fine addition to any collection. Very Fine-.
