Description

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (Columbia, 1939). Fine on Linen. Australian Three Sheet (40" X 80").
Directed by Frank Capra, this classic American drama stars James Stewart as Jefferson Smith, an idealistic and naive young man appointed to the U.S. Senate. Shocked by the corruption around him, Smith stands up to powerful political interests and filibusters to expose wrongdoing and defend democratic principles. The large upper section of the poster had several horizontal tears that were not in the folds. There was small paper loss on some of the tears and on some of the folds. There were some smudges scattered in all the background areas. There were diagonal tears in the lower part of Arthur's dress extending into the even lower part of Stewart's pants, with one in her legs extending into his shoe. There was paper loss in the background to the right of her shoe. There were some pinholes, tears, and paper loss around the edges of that section. The lower section with the title and credits had far less defects than the large section, but it too had pinholes and smudges around the edges and some wear on the folds. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. Given the poster's defects, someone did a pretty nice job of restoring it, but the defects and the restoration are clearly noticeable. One might still display the poster exactly as it is, or certainly, another option would be to have additional restoration performed, with or without re-backing the poster. Obviously, one would prefer to find a better condition example of this poster, but we don't know that any other example of it exists!
