Description

Lolita (MGM, 1962). Poster (40" X 60"). Vladimir Nabokov's novel caused outrage in the United States, so what should a Hollywood studio do with a film adaptation that still covertly retains the perversity of the book? Capitalize on the controversy, of course, and construct a paean to pedophilia in the promotion. The image of the young girl and her lollipop looks familiar now, though no less startling. The 40" x 60" poster offered here asks, "How did they make a movie out of Lolita?," and the answer still seems elusive. The girl is 15 in the movie rather than 12, and some of the more frankly sexual scenes have been diluted or altogether removed. Nevertheless, a middle-aged intellectual carries on an affair with his nymphet stepdaughter, a basic taboo that the recent remake with Jeremy Irons proved was still the rail not to be touched. This large poster beautifully displays the iconic art with the same jaw-dropping vivacity as the film's heroine. Damage to the edges has been professionally repaired, and the restoration has rendered the crease marks and tears within the image area -- including a large one to the right of the girl's left eye -- less noticeable. Fine-, Rolled.
