Description

Jezebel (Warner Bros., 1938). Very Fine- on Linen. 24 Sheet (103" X 232").
Bette Davis commands the screen in one of her most celebrated performances, winning an Oscar for her portrayal of a headstrong and defiant debutante in this sweeping antebellum South drama. This rare poster, featuring a striking image of Davis with bare shoulders against a bold red backdrop, remains one of the most iconic and visually arresting designs of her career. Starring alongside Davis, Henry Fonda plays her fiancé, who ends their engagement after she orchestrates a shocking public spectacle to humiliate him. Jezebel received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture (ultimately losing to You Can't Take It With You). In addition to Davis's win for Best Actress, Fay Bainter earned Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Aunt Belle Massey. Though Davis would go on to receive eight more Oscar nominations, Jezebel marked her second and final win. This remarkable 24 sheet poster is, in our opinion, one of the most awe-inspiring posters from any classic film. With its eight-foot portrait of Davis, this would surely be the centerpiece of any collection. The paucity of 24 sheets for any pre-World War II film, combined with one of the most beloved stars in the history of cinema, leave us struggling to fully convey how important this poster is. This poster has benefitted from touchup along the folds, and some paper has been replaced particularly in the background at the left side of the poster. Backed on linen, this poster presents beautifully and already has grommets installed for easy hanging. A superlative poster in every regard.
