Description

    Hallelujah! (MGM, 1929). Title Lobby Card (11" X 14").
The story of a troubled sharecropper (Daniel L. Haynes) and his relationship with a seductive young woman (Nina Mae McKinney), Hallelujah! was one of the first all-black films produced by a major studio. MGM considered this picture such an immense risk that it asked director King Vidor to forego his salary. Vidor's determination to depict a non-stereotypical view of African-American life earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. The filming and release of the picture was not without travails, incurring resistance from both sides of the Mason-Dixon line. Big theaters were concerned about the crowd the film would draw, and it wasn't until independent exhibitors screened the picture, attracting mixed audiences, that the larger players got on board. It was also early in the talkie era, and Vidor deftly took on the challenge of filming the necessary outdoor scenes silently, and then dubbing in sound, a synchronization process he found "maddening." Paper from this landmark picture is almost never seen at auction. This title card is the first item from the film's promotional campaign Heritage has presented, and we are thrilled it is making its debut in the July Signature auction. In addition, five scene cards are being offered in three separate lots. The title card has been restored, with air brushing to the borders and touchup to paper loss and tears. A nod to the film's moving, dance-hall musical numbers, the card features a dancer atop an oversized, Jazz Age banjo. A monumental find for film aficionados! Good.
