Description

    Hallelujah! (MGM, 1929). Lobby Cards (2) (11" X 14").
One of the first all-black films by a major studio, Hallelujah! is the story of a sharecropper (Daniel L. Haynes) and his difficult relationship with seductive dance hall girl Chick (Nina Mae McKinney). MGM considered this picture such an immense risk that it asked director King Vidor to forego his salary. Vidor's determination to depict a non-stereotypical view of African-American life earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director. The expected controversy surrounded the initial release of the film, and the picture had its share of early talkie technical difficulties, which Vidor was able to gracefully overcome. Heritage is pleased to present for the first time these two scene cards, depicting a revival meeting and Haynes attempting to seduce Victoria Spivey. The title card and three other scene cards are making a highly anticipated appearance as well in this sale. The cards display very well after restoration, with touchup to chips and tears in the borders, and tears that extend slightly into the image area. Not to be missed by devoted fans of landmark filmmaking! Good.
