Description

    Greed (MGM, 1926). Danish Poster (24" X 33.5").
The story of director Erich von Stroheim's Greed is the stuff of Hollywood legend. The picture originally ran 40 reels, or more than 10 hours of screen time, it was pared down to 20 reels after a confrontation with MGM's head of production, Irving Thalberg. After the intractable von Stroheim refused to further compromise his masterpiece, the studio took the picture away from him, and assigned June Mathis to trim the film down to an even shorter 10 reels. It was this version that was eventually released to the public and the one that survives today. Based on the novel McTeague by Frank Norris, Greed remains an intense and powerful film, even in its highly edited form. It's a tale of a fortune won in a lottery that has a disastrous effect on the lives of three separate people - played by Gibson Gowland, Zasu Pitts, and Jean Hersholt - who are dramatically changed by the sudden influx of cash. Heritage is delighted to offer for the first time this engaging Danish poster with its dark portrait of Gowland. Only our strict policy of not awarding a grade higher than Very Fine+ to any poster mounted on linen keeps us from giving this piece an even higher grade. This poster isn't likely to be seen again at auction any time soon, so collectors should not miss this impressive opportunity. Very Fine+ on Linen.
