    Description

    Golden Boy (Columbia, 1939). One Sheet (27" X 41").
This fine dramatization of the Clifford Odet play stars a very young William Holden with Barbara Stanwyck, where he portrays a promising violinist who it set on becoming a boxer. It was Holden's first ever leading role, turning him into an overnight star! Columbia Pictures was initially unhappy with Holden's work, and tried to dismiss him, but Stanwyck stood up to the studio execs and insisted that he be retained. Some thirty-nine years later, when Holden and Stanwyck were joint presenters at the Academy Awards, he interrupted their reading of the nominees to publicly thank her for saving his career. The posters from this classic film are extraordinarily tough to find, and this is only the second time we have ever offered this beautiful one sheet. It looks wonderful after professional restoration corrected fold wear, fold separations, and pinholes. It also had tears and chips in the borders and folds, a few of which extended into the background. There was some paper loss at the center crossfold in Stanwyck's forehead, and the poster has partially addressed scratches in Holden's cheek that are still slightly visible. The borders and the white background on the right side of the title have been airbrushed. Fine on Linen.
