    Description

    Disraeli (United Artists, 1921). One Sheet (27" X 40.5").
George Arliss spent a good deal of his career portraying the famous British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, with two Broadway productions and two films--one silent and a sound remake. Prior to this silent film version Arliss starred in the play by Louis N. Parker. The story tells of the prejudice towards the Jewish, middle-class Disraeli when he became Prime Minister, and of his success acquiring the Suez Canal for England. Charming performances by supporting cast members include Arliss' real life wife, Florence, playing Disraeli's treasured spouse, Lady Beaconsfield, and young paramours Louise Huff and Reginald Denny. Arliss clearly felt comfortable in this role, as he remade Disraeli as a highly lauded talkie in 1929, for which he won the Best Actor Oscar. There has been touchup to the folds, small holes in the top corners, chips and tears in the center crossfold and borders, a misfold at the top horizontal fold with some paper loss, and a chip in Reginald Denny's hand. Part of the bottom border has been replaced and some of the airbrushing in the upper border is beginning to crack. This is the first time Heritage has offered a one sheet from the silent version, and only the second time we have had any paper at all from the film. Fine+ on Linen.
