Description
Blind Husbands (Universal, 1919). Very Fine- on Linen. One Sheet (28" X 42.5").Blind Husbands marks the directorial debut of Erich von Stroheim, who also wrote and starred, and was a breakthrough for its psychological realism. Sam De Grasse co-stars as the neglectful husband to Francelia Billington. When Von Stroheim's character shows interest in Billington, it sets off an epic battle between the two men, leading to a breathtaking climax. The film and its theme arose from von Stroheim's own life experiences. After this successful debut, Von Stroheim's productions became more elaborate, his off-camera behavior more outrageous, and his relationships with studio chiefs and moneymen more contentious, resulting in films being taken out of his hands and re-edited by others. Paper for von Stroheim's early films is exceedingly scarce. The poster depicts von Stroheim at the lower left and Gibson Gowland at the lower right, with Sam De Grasse sitting serenely on the mountain. Professional restoration has addressed fold separation, tears to the borders, pinholes to the top corners, and small crossfold chips. Airbrushing was applied to the folds and crossfolds, and tears to the borders remain visible. The linen has been trimmed to the border edge.
