Description

Beyond the Rocks (Paramount, 1922). Folded, Very Fine-. One Sheet (27" X 41") Henry Clive Artwork.
Unrestored, very rare, and in incredibly wonderful condition, this beautiful stone litho features magnificent artwork of Gloria Swanson by Henry Clive, Paramount's #1 star at that time, and leaving out her co-star, Rudolph Valentino, who was billed as "Rodolph" and who would soon rival Swanson's success! Artist Clive (1883-1960) was an Australian-born illustrator known for his work in The American Weekly. He also acted in silent films and was art director in Charlie Chaplin productions, and starred as a villain in City Lights. His beautiful artwork was also featured on many film magazine covers. At this time, studios almost always had their own poster artists on staff, who would anonymously create their beautiful posters, and they were almost never allowed to sign their work. But for this movie, Henry Clive was hired and allowed to sign his work. On this poster, Gloria Swanson is rendered in sumptuous jewel tones against an onyx background. Beyond the Rocks had an amazing run at the box office, with upcoming heartthrob Rudolph Valentino playing opposite Swanson in this romantic drama. Swanson falls in love with Valentino while married to another. The film is embellished with dreamlike historical flashbacks, set in Arabia, the Alps, London and Paris. And the poster itself does it equal justice. This one sheet is in amazing condition, and would be the showpiece in any movie poster collection.
